Brine is the successor to the original W.H. Brine Company founded in 1922. Brine started as a small athletic equipment and uniform company, selling to private schools and regional camps and quickly grew into a major manufacturer of lacrosse and soccer products. Today, Brine manufactures lacrosse, soccer, volleyball and field hockey equipment and has become one of the most respected privately-owned sporting goods manufacturers in the world.

In the 1950's the focus of the Brine business was in lacrosse. At that time, all lacrosse sticks were wooden and the only producer was Chisholm Lacrosse located on the St. Regis Reservation, Cornwall Island, Canada. With the encouragement and assistance from A. MacDonald Murphy of Governor Dummer Academy, Ferris Thomsen, coach of Penn and Princeton and Mort LaPointe of Bowdoin College, the Brine family began to explore the possibilities of manufacturing lacrosse sticks.

In attempts to come up with a lacrosse stick that was more durable and easier to produce, the Brines experimented with laminated wood, plastic, fiberglass and aluminum but did not find a material that would meet their standards for performance. The Brines continued to experiment and in the 1970's identified Surlyn, a DuPont plastic, as having the properties necessary to stand up to the rigors of lacrosse and manufactured Brine's first plastic stick. Shortly thereafter, Brine developed a molding technique that created the basic draft shape that is standard in all present-day sticks. Since then Brine has continued to lead the market with innovations such as the Offset head and the insertion of gel into protective equipment. In the 1960's, Brine entered into the business of manufacturing soccer balls and soccer equipment. As in lacrosse, Brine also has an extensive list of soccer product innovations. Brine was the first company to use synthetic leather as a covering for a ball to make it more durable. Brine was also the first to develop a perfectly round bladder and was the first to unconditionally guarantee a soccer ball. These innovations coupled with our commitment to quality are the reason the NCAA selected the Brine Championship Ball as the “Official Ball of the NCAA Soccer Championships” over 20 years ago.

In the 1990's Brine introduced an apparel line and line of volleyball equipment. In 2000 Brine continued to expand upon its successful sporting goods line and introduced a full line of field hockey equipment. In 2003, Brine expanded its lacrosse product line and introduced helmets and goggles.

Also in 2003, Brine purchased Penn Yan, NY based In The Crease, the lacrosse market's most respected goals and accessories company. In 2004, Brine entered the footwear market place.

In 2006, Brine was acquired by New Balance, a leading manufacturer of technologically innovative width-sized performance footwear and athletic apparel for women, men, and children.

"Brine's history of manufacturing high-performance team sports products will enable us to broaden our offerings at the global level," says Jim Davis, Chairman and CEO for New Balance. Brine's motto "Find Your Game," speaks directly to their long-standing support of game improvement products and programs, and fits in well with New Balance's philosophy of promoting personal athletic achievements.
